About the Department:
Departmental Activities:
“Exploring, learning, and shaping the world — Spirit of Geography Department, SSM.”
The Department of Geography conducts a wide range of academic and co-curricular activities aimed at enhancing students’ subject knowledge, practical competence, and environmental consciousness. These include greenery drives, workshops, invited lectures, model-making competitions, and hands-on training sessions. Interdisciplinary exposure is provided through teacher exchange programmes and expert-led sessions on topics such as urbanization, satellite imagery, climate change, and drone technology. These initiatives contribute to greater student engagement, improved environmental awareness, and the development of essential technical and analytical skills, preparing students for academic success and future career opportunities.
The department also places strong emphasis on field-based learning through regular educational excursions. These visits offer direct exposure to geographical processes and cultural diversity. Recent field trips include Buxa Tiger Reserve to study human-wildlife conflict, Visakhapatnam for a geomorphological survey of the Araku Valley, Shillong to explore the matrilineal customs of the Khasi community, and Rongtong in the Darjeeling Himalayas for landslide risk assessment. Such experiences help students bridge classroom theory with real-world observation, enabling them to conduct field research and strengthen critical thinking, data analysis, and reporting skills. The outcome is a deeper understanding of geographical concepts, enhanced cultural sensitivity, and stronger preparedness for research-oriented and professional careers.
