  About the Department:
  The Department of Geography of Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya started its journey in the year 2007. The department offers honours, programme and generic elective courses in Geography.At Present the department has four faculties with expertise in the fields of Fluvial Geomorphology, Cartography, Population Geography, Urban Geography, Geo-informatics and one laboratory attendant who constantly guide the students. Several alumni of the department have become luminaries in the different areas of the society from teaching, research to planning etc.. This department is enriched further with the Nodal-Centre of Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) for the various outreach programme offered by IIRS-ISRO. The students hold good result in the UG examination of the affiliating university. Considering the wide importance of modern Geo-spatial technology in recent era, PG Diploma in Applied Geoinformatics has been introduced for the academic session 2023-2024, for the betterment of the students. The diploma course is offered by International Institute of Geospatial Science and Technology (IIGST).The well-developed digital classroom, newly equipped instruments, GIS computer lab facilities, spacious floor, all time the teacher's guidance inspire the students to do something new in their life.


  Departmental Activities:

The department encourages students to participate actively in research activities. Some of the projects that have been completed or are in progress are:

  • An e-magazine titled ‘Nadi Churi’, which was published online during the covid-19 pandemic.
  • A wall magazine on ‘Sustainable Urban Planning, with special reference to Siliguri’, which published in 2022.
  • A magazine called ‘A Jam which is not so yummy!!’, which analyzes the causes and solutions of traffic congestion in Siliguri.
  • A project on ‘finding the source of the Fuleswari river’ and the reasons for its degradation.

A new initiative by the department to find the exact Reduced Level (RL) of the college from the mean sea level. Dumpy level Surveying will be used to find the RL from the nearby railway station. The work is ongoing. Moreover, every year, 4th  Semester& 6th  Semester students prepare a project report on various social and environmental issues. They collect data from the field and propose various solutions related with various problem related with environment and society. These are some of the steps taken by the department to contribute to the improvement of our society.

Departmental Library
Departmental library has a collection of near about 67 books which includes mainly text books. This collection is accessible for the students during the college hours throughout the year except the holidays. There is no separate reading room but laboratory room is kept open during this time. All departmental students are eligible to access this collection. At present home issue is not possible due to shortage of books and students are able to go through this books during the college hours at their department.
