DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
PROGRAMME SPECIFIC OUTCOME

Program Specific Outcome:

English Literature courses at the Department of English cover British, American and Anglophone writing. Students learn how writers use language to explore human experiences. Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya has introduced a new syllabus that promotes a thematic framework where Indian Bhasa literature shares space with contemporary literary crosscurrents. The syllabus helps students develop analytical and interpretive argument skills, improve writing style, analytical skills, diagnose and develop scholarly methodologies, and use language as a means of creative expression. These skills make them effective thinkers and communicators, crucial for careers in our information-intensive society.

With the introduction of FYUGP under NEP by the University of North Bengal, the Department of English, SSM is now offering two types of courses: (1) English Honours and Elective English courses in Part I+II+III mode, (1) CBCS Discipline Specific Core Course and Programme Course, and (2) Four- Year Under Graduate Program (FYUGP). While the first year students will follow FYUGP courses, students promoted to 4th and 6th Semester will continue with CBCS course.

Specific learning outcomes for English courses include the following:

  1. Reading:

English Honours students will gain a global literary perspective. Great texts expand their experience, giving courage and strength through characters. Reading also increases awareness of different perspectives, leading to greater empathy for others.

  1. Literature, Nation and Tradition:

The UG syllabus teaches India's literary and cultural traditions via Sanskrit and modern Indian vernacular literature in English translation. The course now emphasises how English literature can address complex issues of identity, nationalism, and history in India.

  1. Awareness of Culture and History:

The literature program teaches students the relationship between culture, history, and texts. They use texts to explore cultures and interpret them historically. The program focuses on how literary texts identify dominant and marginalised voices in a society.

  1. Gaining Critical Insight:

Reading diverse texts and gaining knowledge of critical theories helps students gain insight into reality and their historical context.

  1. Issue of Sexuality and Gender:

A literature course can teach that one's sense of identity may not be enough to persuade. Humans are no longer limited to binary concepts of sex and gender. Sex is biological, while gender is personal, societal, and cultural. Literary texts can help challenge traditions and beliefs that promote differentiations.

  1. Cross-Fertilization with other Arts:

English Honours students should understand the links between culture, history, and texts, including political representation, economic processes, and other art forms like architecture, sculpture, music, film, painting, dance, and theatre.

  1. Acquisition of Values:

English literature at the UG level helps in personal and social development. It teaches students to appreciate beauty and goodness in life. Their healthy minds become a storehouse of positive thoughts.

  1. Writing Skills and Process:

English students will learn to understand and write in various forms of English. Textual analysis skills can be applied to different types of writing. Studying a variety of writers will help in refining their literary styles. Improved writing skills can lead to writing, editing, content development, and teaching careers.

  1. Means of Effective Communication:

Literature study links to language learning. Learning language patterns, sentence structures, and dialogue forms improves communication skills. English is vital in science, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. Good command of English enhances job prospects.
