  About the Department:

"At the Molecular Level, Chemistry Reflects the Essence of Human Existence"

The Department of Chemistry at Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya commenced its academic journey in 1998 with the introduction of the B.Sc. General Course. Honours was added in 2012, followed by the implementation of a Four-Year Undergraduate Program based on the National Education Policy (NEP) in the academic session 2023-24. Many Honours graduates from the department have successfully secured employment or pursued postgraduate studies at prestigious universities, while others are preparing for competitive examinations. Notably, six students have cleared the IIT-JAM examination and have either completed or are pursuing postgraduate studies at various IITs and NITs and one student has secured the best graduate award of the college.

The department boasts five faculty members with diverse specializations, offering dedicated guidance to students even beyond regular teaching hours. Additionally, four laboratory attendants support students during practical sessions. To enrich the academic experience, interdepartmental faculty exchanges, special lectures by esteemed resource persons from universities and institutes, and seminars on contemporary research topics are regularly organized. The department also conducts add-on courses to acquaint students with emerging and relevant scientific subjects beyond the curriculum.

Students are encouraged to engage in participative and experiential learning activities such as poster presentations, wall magazine publications, industrial visits, and field studies to augment their knowledge & skill development. Seminar presentations by students, a core component of internal assessments, are designed to build confidence and overcome stage fright. The department promotes participation in cultural events organized by the college, and students showcase their talents during the freshers’ welcome and farewell programs, which also help develop organizational and leadership skills.

Achievements in academic, research, and extracurricular activities by students and faculty are recognized and celebrated with SSM Excellence Awards during the college’s Annual Day. Through its committed efforts, the Department of Chemistry continues to uphold its mission of all-inclusive academic and personal development for its students.
