  About the Department:

"At the Molecular Level, Chemistry Reflects the Essence of Human Existence"

The Department of Chemistry began its journey with Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya in 1998 with B.Sc. General Course. Honours was introduced in the year 2012 and a Four-Year Undergraduate Program based on NEP, has been introduced from the session 2023-24. Most of the Honours Graduatesof the department have either got a job or an opportunity of pursuing Post-Graduation from different Universities, while others have chosen to prepare themselves for various competitive examinations. 5 students have qualified the IIT-JAM examination and have either completed or pursuing their post-graduation from various IITs. The department has six teaching faculties of different specializations who are constantly present to guide the students even outside the teaching hours. There are three laboratory attendants who assist the students during their practical sessions. To facilitate better understanding of interdisciplinary areas of the curriculum and exposure to current research, interdepartmental faculty exchange andspecial lectures by Eminent Resource Persons of different Universities and Institutes are organised. The department encourages students in various participative / experiential teaching-learning activities like poster presentation, wall magazine publication, industrial visit, field study etc to enhance their skill development. Student seminar presentation is an integral part of internal assessment which help the students to overcome stage fright and boost their confidence. The department also encourages the students to participate in all cultural competitions organised by the college from time to time. The talent of the students in various cultural activities is also brought forth during the freshers welcome and farewell program which is organised in the department by the students, which in addition also brings out the organizational and leadership qualities in them. Students' and Teachers' achievements in different academic, research and extracurricular activities are duly rewarded by the college authority on Annual Day with SSM Excellence Awards.
