About the Department:

The faculty of commerce was started from the inception time of Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya on 18th September 1998 with only B.com general as the course offered. With a B.com General, Accounting Honours and Management Honours were added in 2000 and 2008, respectively. The B.com Honours Programme (3 Years/6 Semesters) and B.com Programme (3 Years/6 Semesters) were added to the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) pattern starting with the 2018-2022 session. Effective with the 2023-24 academic year, the faculty offer courses under FYUGP with a major in management and a major in accounting and finance. In just 25 years, the commerce faculty has produced two gold medallists in the U.G. Examination at the University of North Bengal, Sarika Rathi in 2016 and Subham Prasad in 2018. In addition, the commerce students actively participate in sports, cultural events, NCC, NSS, and other social awareness programmes. There are currently nine faculties, and their unwavering support and direction have inspired the students to go for higher excellence. Students pursuing commerce in the Darjeeling region, and the neighbouring states of Sikkim, Bihar, and Assam, as well as overseas students from Nepal, also prioritize Surya Sen Mahavidyalaya.

Research Activities:

Beginning with the 2018-2019 academic year, the department has been conducting annual industrial visits for sixth-semester students both within the state and with neighbouring states. The purpose of the visit is to provide students with practical learning experiences, as North Bengal is a prime location for startups. A few former students have already made careers out of tourism.
